Floor drain vs channel drain for commercial kitchens: which handles grease and heavy flow?

2026-10-26

For commercial kitchen drainage, the main challenges are heavy grease, food debris and sudden high water volume, and floor drains and channel drains perform quite differently here. Standard square floor drains have only one outlet, creating a narrow flow bottleneck. Grease and food scraps easily get trapped on the grate and inner core, leading to frequent clogging. They require regular disassembly and cleaning, and are only suitable for small, scattered drainage spots.

Channel drains feature long continuous inlet openings with much larger effective water intake area. They can handle simultaneous drainage from stoves and dishwashing zones. Water level stays stable even under heavy flow. The channel can be fitted with debris baskets and grease interceptors to catch solid waste upfront. Cleaning is simple by just lifting out the basket.

The downside of channel drains is higher upfront civil work cost, as the floor slope needs pre-planning. Floor drains are easier to install and ideal for renovation projects or small kitchens. For large commercial kitchens, channel drain is the preferred choice. Small simple kitchens may use heavy-duty floor drains with deep sediment baskets and anti-clog cores.
